Sexual Dysfunctions Don’t Just Affect Older Men
It isn’t unnatural to lose interest in sex from time to time, but there may be a greater cause for concern in having a low libido or other sexual dysfunctions long term, including erectile dysfunction, decreased sexual satisfaction, or delayed ejaculation. Traditionally, erectile dysfunction (ED) is thought to affect older men, increasing in prevalence by 67% for men 50 years or older. Porn Overuse Could Be Linked to a Low Libido
Some research has shown that young men who regularly watch porn are more likely to indicate that they have a low libido. A 2019 study discussed how there is more evidence that supports the link between lower levels of sexual satisfaction and porn use, though further studies need to be completed. What Else Can Cause Low Libido and Sexual Dysfunction?
There are a variety of other factors that can contribute to sexual dysfunction, like low libido, so it's worth considering what could be the cause for you.
Low Testosterone
Testosterone is a crucial hormone in men. It is responsible for many things like building muscle, stimulating sperm production, and it also plays an important role in sex drive. For men who have a decrease in testosterone, they may also experience a decrease in their libido. A decrease in testosterone is a normal part of getting older, but a significant decrease (especially at a young age) can be concerning and may be the culprit for a decreased sex drive.
Certain Medications
Some medications have the unfortunate side effect of lowering testosterone levels, leading to low libido. Blood pressure medications are a commonly prescribed medication that may inhibit erections and ejaculation. Certain antidepressants, opioid pain relievers, chemotherapy, and corticosteroids may also be to blame for lowering testosterone.
Depression
People who struggle with depression tend to have a reduced lack of interest in a variety of activities they once loved, including sex. This symptom of depression, paired with the potential libido-reducing side effects of antidepressants, can leave some men feeling a low desire for sex.
Stress
Experiencing stress, especially chronic stress, can decrease sexual desire. Stress can disrupt your hormones, leading to a physiological change that lowers your libido. Research evidence has suggested that the body will lower levels of testosterone in response to stress.
Chronic Illness
There are certain chronic illnesses that may make sex feel like a low priority. Obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol can all take a toll on a person’s libido.
